When Bob came onto the IPU, he wanted one thing above anything else. His Sword.
“Bob was a martial arts practitioner and wanted to be able to practice Iaido, which focuses on the drawing of a sword from its scabbard. Bob reassured me the sword was blunt and contained in a scabbard that was stored within another case, which could be secured behind the wardrobe. The ward team met, and agreed the sword could be brought onto the unit.
“His whole demeanour changed, taking huge delight in demonstrating his art, and the range of movement it gave him. It was wonderful to see a man who had previously been so low in mood transformed by the freedom to practice his martial arts. It helped hugely, allowing him to regain the man behind the illness.”
