Fulfilling patient’s final wishes is a key part of what we aim for, and we’ve hosted several weddings at Dorothy House. Helen Lara shares her story:
My sister-in-law, Denise, was admitted to Dorothy House just before lunch around midday on 10th December for end of life care. The staff saw in her notes that before the end, she really had wanted to marry her long-time partner Adam. They knew time was of the essence, if they were going to make her wish come true.
The staff set about doing everything in their power to make the wedding happen. They worked non-stop for hours, arranging the necessary paper work and registrars to ensure the wedding happened. What they did was nothing short of amazing.
By 4:30 that afternoon, they made the wishes of Denise and Adam come true, with a truly magical and moving wedding in the Chapel.
On top of the practicalities, and at such short notice, they arranged a wedding bouquet for the beautiful bride, lent us a digital camera and even organised the wedding breakfast and cake.
I cannot thank them enough; I know several gave up their own time to make this happen, when they had their own families and commitments.
It is so hard to summarise just what a difference you make and what an amazing job you do. Thank you so much.
